The Neuromuscular System
The Neuro Re-Education system includes all the muscles in the body and the nerves serving them. Your brain and muscles work together to produce movement. Every movement your body makes requires a link between thoughts and actions, and the nervous system provides this route of communication.
Nerves send signals between your muscles and your brain about where, when and how fast to move. Over time, muscle movement patterns are learned and stored in your memory.
Neuromuscular Impairment
When nerves or muscles experience damage or injury, muscle movement patterns can be negatively affected. Neuromuscular re-education is one method used by Paul the Physical Therapist to facilitate the return of normal body movement patterns in patients with neuromuscular impairments.
Neuro Re-Education consists of training (or re-training) your muscles, your brain, and the nerves used for them to communicate with each other to improve movement, strength, balance and function.
No matter how strong your muscles are, if they are not getting precise instructions, you will be unable to perform complex tasks successfully.
Neuromuscular Re-education
Paul the Physical Therapist uses specific exercises to challenge your muscles and your mind to practice and improve communication and coordination. Some techniques he may use are:
- Balance Training
- Motor Control Training
- Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF)
- Postural Re-training
- Therapeutic Exercise
