What is Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, progressive, neurological disorder that affects the nerve cells in the brain. Parkinson’s disease often starts with a tremor in one hand. Other symptoms are slow movement, stiffness, loss of balance, and difficulty with posture. Each year in the US, approximately 60,000 people are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Are You Living with Parkinson’s Disease?
At Cedar Hill Physical Therapy & Wellness Center, Paul the Physical Therapist offers the LVST BIG Program. LSVT BIG is a unique physical therapy approach to better movement for patients with Parkinson’s disease. It has been extensively studied with over 20 years of research from National Institutes of Health funding. These studies have shown that LSVT BIG can lead to significant long-lasting improvements in a patient’s balance, gait pattern, and overall function. For more information visit LSVT BIG
Get Started on a Path to Improvement
Because LSVT BIG treatment is customized to each person’s specific needs and goals, it can help regardless of the stage or severity of the patient’s condition. That said, the treatment may be most effective in the early or middle stages of the disease when the patient can both improve function and potentially slow further symptom progression.
Beginning work with LSVT BIG before the patient notices significant problems with balance, mobility or posture will often lead to the best results, but it’s never too late to start. LSVT BIG can produce significant improvements even for people facing considerable physical difficulties.
The LSVT BIG program is designed to take place during 16 one-on-one, hour-long sessions over the course of one month. Patients also have daily homework and a home exercise plan.
